Description
After eleven years of war the Taliban’s public declaration that they will hold talks with the United
States in Qatar is a major break through for the political process, Afghanistan’s internal stability and
the relative peace that will be needed by the US and NATO in 2014 before they can exit
Afghanistan without too much bloodshed. However, one major key to success is how Pakistan re
sponds. Pakistan has maintained the Taliban leadership on its soil for the past eleven years and
has given support to the Taliban insurgency. Moreover, its sixty year relationship with the United
States, which is critical to Pakistan’s future stability and peace in South Asia, is broken and full of
rancour at present. There can be no Afghan peace without Pakistan and without Pakistani, Afghan
and US cooperation and this is examined by Ahmed Rashid in his contribution.
