Description

In modern Afghanistan even discussions on non-linguistic issues are often overshadowed by the tense relationship between the two main and official languages Dari and Pashto. The paper analyses these linguistic quarrels by taking into consideration extra linguistic factors like ethnic dynamics and by elaborating on some linguistic issues as well. It shows that processes of politically
intended linguistic divergence in the formal registers of language go hand in hand with processes of linguistic convergence in the less formal registers of colloquial speech.
